5 more types of loss

Grief is about loss. Death is the most obvious loss, but we need to remember that we all experience loss throughout our lives. Bereavement Specialist Terri Daniel lists 5 losses other than death:

1. Estrangement, which is loss of friendship, romantic relationship, or family ties

2. Loss of financial security, such as home foreclosure, declining investments, or job loss

3. Loss of physical wellbeing due to illness or injury

4. Chosen loss such as quitting smoking

5. Institutional loss; for example when a social system such as your church or job fails to live up to its promise to protect you or be there for you

What losses are you experiencing? How are you handling the grief?

Remember to be gentle with yourself. Reach out for support. Take good care of yourself as you navigate this time in your life.
